Abstract

Introduction: The present study delves into the understanding of the interrelationship between dance practice and individual well-being, highlighting its relevance in promoting quality of life, motivation, and disposition. This theme is increasingly important as its implications directly resonate in contemporary lifestyles. Dance, as an artistic, cultural, and physical expression, emerges as the object of analysis, attracting researchers committed to understanding and optimizing the benefits provided by this practice. Objective: To explore and analyze, through literature, the benefits of dance concerning well-being and quality of life, encompassing fundamental concepts such as subjective well-being, quality of life, and enhancement of physical and mental health. Methodology: To achieve this goal, a literature review method was employed, investigating recent research published in scientific articles and indexed sources on the internet over the last five years. The careful analysis of these studies provided an in-depth understanding of the positive impacts of dance on various spheres of human well-being. Results and Discussions: The analyzed studies underscore the need for specific methodologies in the teaching and practice of dance. Regarding the role of the instructor, a sensitivity to variables such as age, space, and teaching methods is suggested. The diversification of dance styles is advocated, ensuring a holistic approach to the body and promoting body awareness. The studies highlighted significant improvements in the physical, mental, and social health of elderly individuals in long-term care facilities, indicating dance as an effective tool in promoting well-being in vulnerable populations. It also revealed that dance participation is predominantly female, attributing this phenomenon to prejudiced conceptions that permeate the relationship between men and this artistic expression. The cultural stigma associating dance predominantly with women contributes to the low participation of men, potentially harming men's health. A more detailed study showed that the pandemic significantly reduced physical activities, impacting the dance sector, resulting in a sedentary lifestyle with adverse consequences for physical and mental health. The analysis points to dance as a potential solution to combat the negative effects of social isolation. Its practice can serve as an effective antidote, contributing to reversing this trend and promoting a more active life. Final Remarks: Over the years, dance has undergone transformations and adaptations until it was incorporated into the academic realm. However, its acceptance and recognition still need improvement. The need for effective measures to foster recognition and widespread practice of dance in global society remains imperative. There is a gender disparity in dance participation, reflecting deeply rooted cultural norms. Therefore, it is imperative to demystify and combat prejudices associated with male participation in dance, promoting gender equity in this domain. Breaking these patterns will contribute to a more inclusive and comprehensive practice of dance. The present study contributes to an in-depth understanding of the benefits of dance in the context of well-being, providing relevant insights for promoting a more holistic approach to dance in contemporary society.
